Encaustic Q&A: Embedding metal objects

If you embedded a piece of rusty tin or metal would it be archival?

The short answer to your question is no. In order for encaustic paintings to be archival embedded objects must be porous to appropriately fuse. If you embed something that is not porous, over time it’s quite possible with movement, temperature change, etc., the embedded object will shift and move and separate from the piece.
